A wide range of standardised prefabricated intersection pieces are available allowing easy site welding of butt joints to Sure-Stop® PVC Waterstop junction pieces. Customised pieces can be made to suit. In such cases, drawings must be provided giving exact dimensions and jointing details.

The width of waterstop depends upon the thickness of the concrete and positioning of the reinforcement. The thickness of the concrete should be greater than or equal to the width of the waterstop profile. Refer to your engineer for further clarification and approval.

INTERNAL & EXTERNAL STYLE SURE-STOP® PVC WATERSTOPS

1. Prior to placement, all Sure-Stop® PVC Waterstop joins and intersections must be welded together on site using our recommended welding and joining procedure (refer to our “CORKJOINT® Sure-Stop® PVC Waterstop Site Joining Guidelines” brochure).
2. Sure-Stop® PVC Waterstop should be positioned inside the joint so that one half of the waterstop width is embedded into each concrete pour. (Refer FIG. 1).
3. INTERNAL Sure-Stop® PVC Waterstops must be securely tied into position through the pre-punched brass eyelets located on the external outer flanges of the waterstop. These are positioned every 300mm apart along both outer edges of the waterstop, giving a very secure fixing position. In vertical joint applications, the placement of form work is then positioned below and on top of the waterstop by butting up to it from both sides, achieving a split formwork outcome, which also helps secure/hold the waterstop into position. (Refer FIG. 2 ) Usually in horizontal joint applications no formwork is required.
4. EXTERNAL Sure-Stop® PVC Waterstop are secured into position by concrete nails that are hammered through the specially designed outer flange areas of the waterstop, into the lean concrete base (blinding layer) for slab on ground applications or by nails or screws into the formwork, for wall applications. In vertical joint applications the placement of formwork is then positioned on top of the waterstop by butting up to it. This also helps secure/hold the waterstop into position. (Refer FIG. 3)
5. To achieve the ultimate installation procedure, carefully place the concrete so as not to displace Sure-Stop® PVC Waterstop from its position. Thoroughly vibrate concrete around the waterstop to avoid air entrapment and to provide a positive contact between the waterstop and the concrete. Particular care should be taken when installing internal waterstops for slab on ground applications to make sure concrete is fully vibrated and compacted around and underneath the waterstop and all its ribs. (Refer FIG. 4).
6. Please also refer to our “CORKJOINT® Sure-Stop® PVC Waterstop Site Joining Guidelines” for further information on Sure-Stop® PVC Waterstop welding / joining procedures and preparation and installation procedures.

Where shown on the drawings waterstops shall be Sure-Stop® PVC Waterstop (state profile number required) as supplied by CORKJOINT®. Provide factory made waterstop fabrications for all changes of direction, intersections and transitions, leaving only straight butt joined splices for on-site fabrication.

 Joining of PVC Waterstops is performed by heat welding which results in the discharge of hydrogen chloride mist and vapour. In confined spaces or in still air conditions, the use of a ventilation fan or suitable respirator should be used, and the advice and approval of the Site Safety Supervisor is essential. Due to expansive forces, Superswell® 47B should be both detailed and installed with a minimum 50mm clear cover to the face of the concrete. Expansion rate can vary in salt and contaminated water. Increase cover when using light weight, low strength concrete. Not for use where excessive shrinkage of the concrete may occur at the joint faces. Do not stretch the Superswell® 47B during installation. Not for use in movement (expansion, isolation and contraction) joints.

EXPANSION RATE PROPERTIES – 30 DAY IMMERSION DURATION

Superswell® 47B requires a minimum 50mm cover of concrete from the outside edge.

1. Brush off any dust or debris from the surface where the Superswell® 47B is to be applied. Brush a coat of CJ-100 Adhesive 30mm wide onto the concrete surface and one coat to the surface of the Superswell® 47B.
2. Once both surfaces where the adhesive was applied are touch dry, with the use of your thumbs or heel of your hand, firmly press a continuous bead of Superswell® 47B into position, making sure you achieve full contact with the adhesive on the concrete surface. Do not stretch the Superswell® 47B when applying it into position.
3. Use a neat, firm butt join to join Superswell® 47B together and then knead the ends together to form a continuous uninterrupted gasket. This type of join is used for continuous placement of  Superswell® 47B and for any intersection joins.
4. Check to see that the Superswell® 47B has totally adhered to the concrete surface. If the surface is rough or irregular, you may need to use a firmer hand pressure to make sure that the Superswell® 47B has full contact with the surface. There must be no visible gaps under the Superswell® 47B after installation.
5. The protective paper layer cover on the Superswell® 47B can be removed any time prior to the second pour of concrete taking place.
6. Placement of the second pour of concrete can be applied once the CJ-100 Adhesive has dried. Upon pouring, make sure the concrete is properly compacted and vibrated around the Superswell® 47B.
7. If the Superswell® 47B has been exposed to water (moisture) prior to the second pour taking place, check for pre-expansion. If the product has pre-expanded, then remove that section and replace with a new length of Superswell® 47B.
8. For vertical construction joints and overhead applications, it may be necessary to also secure the Superswell® 47B with nails, placed approximately every 250mm apart. This is usually only required as extra security if you need to pour your concrete prior to the CJ-100 Adhesive drying completely.

Waterstops where shown on the drawings shall be Superswell® 47B controlled expansion waterstop as supplied by CORKJOINT®.  SURFACE PREPARATION

The surface to receive the membrane must be prepared thoroughly before applying the
adhesive and membrane, free from oil, grease, paint, dust, laitance and water. Make sure that the surface and joint edges are structurally sound, smooth, flat and free of any deep holes or protrusions. Rough surfaces or voids should be flattened mechanically with a grinder and deep voids or holes filled with a high-quality non-shrink grout or mortar.

If the surface has existing oil, grease, paint, solvent, form-oil, mould or algae present, sand blast or grind back to good clean, sound concrete.

For installation for an expansion joint, chamfer the joint edges with a 5mm to 10mm angle so to remove the sharp edge. 

For new concrete application, the concrete must be a minimum of 28 days old.

ADHESIVE FOR BONDING

CORKJOINT® CJ Epoxy Adhesive two-component, low viscosity, thixotropic epoxy adhesive (refer to individual product brochure for further information).

PREPARATION OF ADHESIVE FOR BONDING

Refer to CORKJOINT® CJ Epoxy Adhesive Product Brochure for mixing directions.

MEMBRANE INSTALLATION

Apply a 2.0mm thick application of CJ Epoxy Adhesive onto the concrete surface on each side with a metal scraper or trowel. Once the CJ Epoxy Adhesive is applied, remove the internal masking tape application on each side, prior to applying the membrane.

Lift and lay the membrane into position and lightly push the outer fixing section of the membrane into the adhesive on each side so the adhesive pushes through the fixing holes. Apply another 2.0mm thick layer of CJ Epoxy Adhesive on top of the membrane fixing section and smooth it out accordingly with a suitable trowel assuring full compaction of the adhesive and membrane, and removing any air pockets. Immediately remove the masking tape from each outside edge. Refer to Figure 3 under Installation Drawings.

If the membrane is to have any floor covering, concrete topping, ceramic tiles or mechanical cover applied over it, then sprinkle a light application of fine quartz sand on to the top coat application of adhesive to create a rough surface for bonding. This is to be done prior to the second layer of masking tape removal and while the adhesive is still wet. Once the adhesive is dried, brush away any loose sand.

Protection from damage must be applied over the membrane during the application and finishing processes of the membrane and concrete surface coverings.

For installation of membrane over cracks apply the same installation procedures as above. Refer to Figure 5 under Installation Drawings.

MEMBRANE JOINING

If a length of membrane is required to be joined, then overlap one section of membrane to the other by 50mm and then heat weld the join overlap section by hot air welding. Be careful not to burn or char the membrane. Once the required melt is achieved, firmly press the membrane down on to the other with a hand roller or other type of suitable tool, applying firm hand pressure to remove any air pockets or creases. Allow the join to cool for 5 minutes and do not bend or pull the membrane. The above procedure is also used for joining of Intersection pieces. Factory made Intersection pieces are available by order. Refer to CORKJOINT®’s Job Site Welding/ Joining Procedures for further information.

•  Sharp object penetration, perforation loading or mechanical damage.
• Non-trafficable with direct traffic loading on to the membrane. If J-Seal® EX TPER is to be used for a trafficable joint, then a suitable joint cover system should be applied over for protection.
• High hydrostatic head pressures unless used in conjunction with an appropriate joint waterstop system. Refer to CORKJOINT® for further information on suggested waterstop system to consider.
• If J-Seal® EX TPER is to be applied in areas of direct water pressure (positive side) for a slab or wall joint, then the under-side of the membrane must be supported by an appropriate expansion joint fillerboard. For a wall joint application on the negative side, please contact CORKJOINT® for further information.
• Exposure to direct sunlight or UV for extended periods.
• Check compatability for use with other joint systems, joint sealants or waterproofing membranes.
